What are carbon fibers?
Carbon fibers are tiny fibers that are thinner than hair woven together. They measure between 5 to 10 micrometers diametrically. These are also known as graphite fibers. It is supposedly much stronger than steel. Some claim it to be five times stronger which makes it a good replacement for steel. Its light weight makes it portable, and convenient to mold. Carbon atoms are its main component, however, the raw material used to make it is polyacrylonitrile, which is ninety percent of the total compound.
The processes of stretching, carbonization and oxidization vaporizes half of the polyacrylonitrile which turns it to carbon. These carbon atoms, that are used to produce a carbon fiber, are laid out parallel to the fiber to form crystals. One needs twelve thousand carbon fibers to make a tow that is then used to turn it into a fabric. It is a good conductor of heat, has no poisons or toxins, is biologically inert and resistant to corrosion, fatigue or fire. It is almost everything one needs for the production of sturdy goods.
Some form of it has existed since man started inventions. In the 1800s, when Thomas Edison baked cotton threads at high temperatures and used them in the first light bulbs. Carbon fibers, as we know them now are relatively new in origin, dating back to 1958, unlike steel or coal or other resources. It first came into high productivity use in the United States of America, Cleveland, Ohio. In 1963, a British research center recognized the potential uses of carbon fibers and carried out experiments to understand its strength and malleability. Currently, scientists and researchers are working for the development of cheaper ways of producing carbon fibers.
Its properties, like stiffness after molding, chemical resistance, temperature tolerance and zero or low thermal expansion makes it extremely prevalent and common with engineers who use it in aerospace, transport production, production of military goods, in sports goods and even to make blades for wind turbines. They may be slightly costlier than glass or plastic fibers but they are certainly worth the money because of their high propensity and elasticity, as well as multipurpose use. It is said to help worldwide manufacturers of energy goods, electronics, and wiring and even to reduce fuel costs. Its purpose has increased for luxury goods in recent years.
